Linda Wilder’s paintings invite us to look at the Canadian landscape a little differently. Rather than simply recreating what she sees, she responds to the atmosphere and character of a place, allowing colour, gesture, and intuition to guide the work.

We spoke with Linda to talk about her connection to nature, what draws her eye when she’s outdoors, and how her approach to painting continues to evolve.

The Canadian wilderness has been an ongoing source of inspiration in your work. What keeps you returning to the landscape as a subject? 

I’m surrounded by mountains, lakes, rivers, forests and waterfalls, creating an endless supply of inspiration.   

When you’re out in nature, what makes you stop and think, “I need to paint this”? 

It’s more than just a scene. For me it’s a feeling. 

The simplest things can make my heart jump. From tangled trees and bushes to a trickle of water. 

I look for shapes not things, but the most important is light.  

I look for light, shadow and reflections. For example I love a snow bank bathed in light and shadow with bits of Autumn colours showing through.

Your work often captures the movement and energy of nature rather than simply documenting a place. How do you translate that feeling onto the canvas? 

More and more my work is gravitating towards a more abstract approach to try and capture the emotion of my environment instead of a place. 

I enjoy the creative process and being intuitive, often not knowing where the painting will take me. 

Being intuitive, excites me and gets my creative juices flowing, allowing me the freedom to grow and explore.  

Are there particular landscapes, seasons, or environments that you feel most connected to as an artist? What has painting the Canadian landscape taught you about the places you thought you already knew? 

I enjoy sunny, warm winter walks along a creek, with melting snow or ice. Another favourite is sunny autumn days walking in the woods and being inspired by all the colours and sounds. 

The Canadian landscape has taught me how to see and feel in a more abstracted way… I no longer just see trees, water or a mountain, I see shapes and light.

Linda’s connection to the Canadian landscape continues to shape an evolving body of work, rooted in observation but guided by intuition and a strong sense of feeling.
