In 1946, at the age of two, Rod Prouse and his family emigrated to Canada from England. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1968 and worked for a brief period in the commercial art world before becoming a full-time artist. In 1972, Prouse settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia and began to exhibit his work. His first one-man show, in 1977 at the Canadian Fine Arts Gallery in Toronto, met with rave reviews. Subsequent Canadian and international exhibitions have proven equally successful. He currently lives in Georgian Bay, Ontario and travels widely capturing the life & energy of each place he visits within his art.

Rod has worked in watercolours, gouache, pastel, conte, oil and pencil, as well as with drawing tools as unlikely as routers, skill saws and grinders. His painting is accomplished and assured, exuding a great sense of vitality and exuberance. Within his woodcuts and engravings he creates intact universes embedded in line and shape.

Rod spends several weeks every year in Jasper, Alberta, creating wonderful images of the townsite and Park exclusively for The Gallery At Jasper Park Lodge.

Artists’ Statement

‘My work is figurative with a strong sense of location, not so much to represent place, as to celebrate unique encounters with the natural world.’
